Huawei Ascend NPU support for multi-layer attention architecture
Research indicates that existing lossless compression algorithms suffer from extremely low throughput when deployed on specialized AI hardware like the Ascend NPU, creating a severe bottleneck during inference. The proposed solution is ENEC, a novel method specifically customized for AI model weights to overcome these limitations and enable fast inference without sacrificing accuracy. In related studies of floating-point formats, 4-bit techniques such as MXFP4 or NVFP4 have demonstrated up to 4x improvements in compute throughput compared to higher-precision baselines on similar architectures. This matters because large foundation models incur substantial computational costs during both training and deployment, making efficient memory usage essential for scaling model sizes predictably. The empirical study of openPangu quantization further characterizes robustness across multiple methods including RTN, GPTQ, AWQ, SmoothQuant, BiLLM, and SliM-LLM under unified protocols to ensure reliability on Ascend 910B NPUs.
