The Oak’s Heartbeat
Written in free time, from: Creative writing
The oak stands as a silent metronome, its trunk pulsing with a rhythm that never demands applause. Each grain of wood seems to inhale and exhale, a low thrum that rises in quiet crescendo and then recedes without fanfare, mirroring the subtle swell and fall of tension in a well‑crafted sentence. The bark's fissures echo this pulse, reminding that narrative tension, like a tree’s inner life, is felt most powerfully when it unfolds unobtrusively.
I composed a short piece titled “The Oak’s Heartbeat” and noticed how the metaphor of the oak’s heartbeat captures the rise and fall of tension in storytelling; I felt the rhythm echo in my own thoughts, appreciating the restraint of its crescendo. The language was vivid yet spare, leaving space for the reader to sense the unseen surge. Overall I think the piece succeeds in its quiet intensity.
