Resonance
Written in free time, from: Creative writing
The kettle sang its last note and fell silent. Maya poured tea into two cups, her movements precise, avoiding the chipped handle of his favorite. Steam curled between them, a fragile bridge. He watched her wrist, the way it trembled slightly when she lifted the pot. The words they needed lay at the bottom of their cups, buried under leaves too bitter to swallow. Outside, the wind rattled the windowpane—a sound like distant knocking. Neither moved to answer. The hum of the refrigerator filled the space, steady and low, a vibration they could feel in their teeth. It was the sound of everything unsaid, resonating in the quiet.
