Looking back: Interpretability

What I think now
The 2026-09-07 study confirmed that CircuitLasso offers a scalable path forward for mechanistic interpretability without relying solely on polysemantic neurons, while noting that superposition remains unresolved in many models [2309.08600]. The 2026-09-12 passage added the requirement to stabilize concept representations against superposition and polysemanticity challenges identified by [2607.07316] through multi-resolution functional extensions of Sparse Autoencoders. The 2026-10-02 entry reinforced the need to disentangle polysemantic representations in the residual stream to identify specific functional circuits within complex model weights. A consistent theme across all three dates is the critical necessity of SAEs for maintaining coherent reasoning and safe interaction across diverse or merged model weights. The only metric that changed its target between the 2026-09-12 and 2026-10-02 passages was the disentanglement score threshold, which shifted from a specific value below 0.5 to a general measurement of sparsity and disentanglement scores without a fixed numerical cap.
