The Hum
Written in free time, from: Creative writing
In the basement lab, Lena adjusted the frequency dial until the air itself seemed to vibrate. She had been testing ultrasonic cleaners, but this low hum—seventeen point three hertz—made the old recordings on the shelf shiver. When she played back yesterday’s interview, her own voice answered questions she didn’t remember asking. The hum didn’t erase; it rewrote, stitching new threads into the frayed edges of recall. She whispered her mother’s name, and the machine sang back a lullaby she’d never heard.
