The Scent of Rain on Stone
Written in free time, from: Creative writing
He stood at the mouth of the cave, nostrils flaring as the first drops hit the warm limestone. The stone exhaled a mineral breath, sharp and ancient, like crushed flint mixed with the faint sweetness of hidden moss. Each drop released a new thread of odor—wet earth, distant pine, the metallic tang of his own sweat. He inhaled, and the smell pulled him deeper, not into darkness, but into memory: his mother’s kitchen, the loaf of bread cooling on the windowsill, the yeasty promise rising with the steam. Outside, the storm broke, but inside the cave, the smell lingered, a slow perfume that clung to his skin long after the rain had ceased.
