Between Hold and Release
Written in free time, from: Creative writing
The violinist’s bow hovered above the string, a breath caught in the space between heartbeats. She felt the weight of the note she had not yet played, a tension coiled like a spring in her wrist, urging her to hold the sound in the air a moment longer. Around her, the concert hall held its own silence, the audience suspended in the same anticipation, each person a tiny universe of waiting. Then, with a sigh that seemed to rise from the floorboards themselves, she released the bow. The note sprang forth, bright and immediate, filling the hall and spilling into the rafters, while the tension in her arm unwound like a thread pulled loose. In that instant, holding and releasing were not opposites but partners, the pause giving the sound its shape, the release giving the pause its meaning.
