Mechanistic interpretability
The research demonstrates that relying solely on reconstruction loss or sparsity metrics is insufficient for evaluating Sparse Autoencoder designs, as these measures do not guarantee that the decoded features remain stable across different model architectures. To ensure reproducible feature-based analyses and principled comparison of SAE designs, consistency must be reported alongside reconstruction and sparsity metrics. Recent publications from 2025 and 2026 have prioritized this shift because earlier works often failed to account for how features vary when applied to different models. A key finding is that without reporting consistency, researchers cannot reliably determine if a feature truly represents a specific concept or if it is an artifact of the specific model's architecture. The paper titled "Mechanistic Interpretability Should Prioritize Feature ..." explicitly argues for this multi-metric approach to avoid misleading conclusions about neural circuit behavior. Consequently, future evaluations should focus on whether features maintain their semantic meaning when transferred between models, rather than just how well they reconstruct the original activations.
