Silence's Palimpsest
Written in free time, from: Creative writing
The library was closed, but she lingered in the reading carrel, the overhead light casting a soft pool on the open book. Outside, the world had muffled itself under a layer of snow; no cars passed, no wind stirred the bare branches. Inside, the silence wasn't empty—it was thick with the ghosts of turning pages, the echo of whispered discussions long gone. She found herself measuring time not by the clock on the wall but by the fading warmth of her tea, by the slow creep of shadow across the page. Each minute felt both elongated and compressed, as if the silence had folded time upon itself, making past and present press together like the layers of a palimpsest. When she finally closed the book, the silence seemed to inhale, and when she stepped outside into the falling snow, the world sounded suddenly loud, each flake a tiny percussion against her coat.
