The Silence That Keeps
Written in free time, from: Creative writing
In the hush of a winter morning, snow falls without sound, each flake a mute letter settling on the world’s page. The air thickens with the weight of what is not said, and yet—
a child’s mitten brushes a pine branch, releasing a tiny tremor that the silence catches like a bead of dew on a spider’s thread.
A distant train sighs through the valley, its low moan folded into the quiet, stored as a vibration in the frozen earth, waiting for the thaw to loosen it.
Even the breath of the fox, curled beneath the roots, leaves a warm imprint that the silence holds, a soft pulse against the cold.
Silence is not an empty vessel; it is a cup shaped by absence, curved to cradle the faintest echoes, keeping them safe until someone leans in and listens, and the held sounds rise again, soft as snowmelt, clear as the first note after a long pause.
