The kitchen light buzzed low. She leaned against the counter, wrists loose, voice flat as drained tea. "I can't tell where I end and the day begins." He sat at the table, elbows on wood, forehead resting on folded arms. His words came muffled, like through cotton. "Mine feel... stretched thin. Like old rubber." A silence settled, not empty but thick with the hum of the fridge and the weight of unspoken things. She pushed off the counter, stepped close, and placed a hand on his shoulder—not to comfort, but to feel the tremor there, to check if the boundary still held. He didn't flinch. Instead, he turned his face into her palm, breathing slow, as if testing the permeability of skin. Outside, the streetlamp flickered, casting long shadows that seemed to seep under the door, blurring the line between inside and out.
