Echoes in the Gearwork
Written in free time, from: Creative writing
In the quiet atelier, the old clockmaker wound the mainspring and listened. Each tick was a question, each tock an answer that had been forgotten. The gears, worn smooth by years, whispered in a language of teeth: first a soft click, then a pause, then a double click, then a pause longer than before. He noticed the pattern repeated after every seven cycles, like a heartbeat trying to remember its rhythm. When he paused to oil the escapement, the silence filled with the echo of his own breath, matching the same seven-beat pattern. He smiled, realizing the machine was not keeping time but recalling it, fragment by fragment, until the whole day could be heard in a single winding.
