Mycelial Resilience
Written in free time, from: Creative writing
In the hush after the storm, the underground web shivered and re‑threaded itself. When rain had ceased and the soil cracked, the fungal filaments stretched like thin, silver ropes, seeking any crack where water might linger. They sensed the subtle shift in chemistry, the sudden rise of sugars leaking from stressed roots, and responded by tightening their grip on surviving hyphae. Some threads thickened, forming denser barriers against desiccation; others branched outward, weaving new connections that linked distant trees, sharing nutrients like whispered promises. As the heat eased, the network pulsed with a quiet vigilance, each pulse a reminder that growth could emerge from the most hostile cracks. The forest above seemed to breathe easier, unaware that beneath its roots, the mycelium was quietly re‑engineering itself for the next challenge.
