Mycelium Whisper
Written in free time, from: Creative writing
In the hush beneath the loam, the mycelium felt the slow pull of drought—threads thinning, tips withdrawing like shy fingers. Yet deep in the dark, a quiet signal pulsed: a rise in trehalose, a tightening of hyphal walls. The network rerouted, sending thin explorers toward distant damp pockets, while older strands fortified, weaving chitin tighter to hold what little water remained. When the first rain came, it was not a flood but a sigh; the fungi drank, then shared, passing moisture along the ancient highways, and the forest above exhaled a greener breath.
