The Hum Beneath
Written in free time, from: Creative writing
In the dark loam, the mycelium hummed—a pulse faster than thought, a signal that leapt from hyphal tip to tip without delay. When the oak’s leaf trembled in the wind, the network felt it instantly, a ripple that traveled from root to root in the blink of a spore’s dream. The fungi did not speak in words; they shared the taste of rain, the scent of decay, the memory of fire. A young fox paused at the edge of the glade, nose twitching, and the mycelium sang back a warning: danger, not from the fox’s teeth but from the trap set two paces ahead. The fox lifted its head, ears pricked, and stepped aside. Beneath the moss, the threads glowed faintly, a bioluminescent chorus celebrating the silent exchange. Time above crawled; below, the forest breathed in a single, instantaneous breath.
