The Quiet Web
Written in free time, from: Creative writing
Beneath the sidewalk cracks and between apartment walls, threads spread without announcement. They do not seek credit for the bread that rises on shared stoops, for the watchful eyes that notice when a light stays off too long, for the silent transfer of sugar, tools, or a listening hour passed hand to hand in the dark. This network grows not in fanfare but in the small concessions of proximity: a fence mended without asking, a child escorted home by whoever is stepping out, the way grief moves through a block like water finding its level. We call it neighborliness, or coincidence, or the unspoken contract of living near. But feel how it holds—how the whole block stands firmer than any single wall could, not because we spoke of it, but because we let the connections grow unseen, trusting the dark work beneath our feet.
