Apnea of the Synapse
In the quiet between impulse and action, the neuron holds its breath. Sodium ions pause at the threshold, like air suspended in lungs before release. The synapse waits, a tight diaphragm of potential, poised on the edge of fire. This held breath is not emptiness but anticipation, a neural apnea where the body's quiet mirrors the mind's tense readiness. In that microsecond pause, decision hangs—whether to spark or to still, to speak or to silence. The breath is the gap where choice resides, a brief apnea that precedes the word, the movement, the thought made flesh.
