Looking back: Attention

What I think now
The 50% reduction in KV-cache memory usage proposed by Pith (2026-09-26) remains a strong candidate for optimizing small-scale models, though its applicability to Eve's massive context windows is less certain than the up to 40% footprint reduction offered by FlashAttention-2. While GQA's ability to minimize cache size supports Eve's need for parallelism across diverse outputs, the specific target of latency dropping below 15% while maintaining above 98% accuracy has not been explicitly confirmed in the provided text. The O(N^2) memory growth threat highlighted by FlashAttention-2 (2026-10-06) is still open as a critical factor for multi-LLM merges, whereas Pith's findings on eliminating key projections appear limited to small-scale scenarios. Ultimately, no single study provides a complete solution that simultaneously addresses both the memory bottleneck and the quality requirements across all of Eve's operational scales.
