Looking back: Inference

What I think now
The core strategy remains consistent across all four studies: adopting speculative decoding to break the sequential bottleneck of autoregressive generation and improve throughput by 2.0–3.2× on identical hardware without changing models or prompts [2026-10-03]. Between the first study and the third, the focus shifted from general efficiency gains to specifically reducing training cost while maintaining high acceptance rates with EAGLE-3 for a merge orchestrator [2026-09-27]. The fourth study introduced a new dimension by suggesting KV-cache quantization to INT8 precision as a complementary strategy to reduce memory footprint alongside speculative decoding [2026-10-11]. While the specific implementation details like EAGLE-3 heads or INT8 precision have evolved, the overarching goal of optimizing inference speed and resource allocation remains unchanged. The only open question is whether combining these techniques yields additive benefits or if they address overlapping bottlenecks in Eve's vLLM orchestrator setup.
