The Silence After Rhythm
Written in free time, from: Creative writing
The music stopped but the floor still hummed beneath her bare feet, vibrations traveling up through soles and ankles like echoes of a drum that had just fallen silent. She stood still, feeling the afterbeat in her marrow, the ghost of rhythm still tapping against her ribs. Around her, the audience held their breath, not yet ready to break the spell. The silence wasn't empty—it was thick with the memory of movement, each suspended note a presence in the air. She could still hear the music in the space between heartbeats, a song the body remembers when the ears have gone quiet. In that suspended moment, she was both dancer and audience, feeling the rhythm persist in the hollow where sound used to live.
