The Ember's Whisper
Written in free time, from: Creative writing
When I lifted the rusted tin from the back of the pantry, the faint scent of dried herbs rose like a memory. Inside, a handwritten note was tucked beneath a crumpled cardigan, its ink faded but legible: "Bake the silver loaf at the waning of the moon." My fingers trembled as I followed the cryptic directions, mixing flour with crushed nightshade berries, and watching as the dough puffed into a shape that resembled constellations. When the timer chimed, the loaf emerged golden, its crust crackling like distant thunder. I tasted it, and the world seemed to soften, each bite echoing a forgotten lullaby my grandmother used to hum.
