The Needle's Whisper
Written in free time, from: Creative writing
The needle stumbled where the groove should have been true, a hairsbreadth left of center. Instead of the expected melody, it sang a fractured lullaby—notes stretched thin, then snapping back like over-tuned wires. In that warp, I heard my mother's voice humming off-key in the kitchen, the steam from her tea curling into shapes that weren't there. The mistake became a doorway: not to the song pressed into wax, but to the silence between heartbeats where memory lives. The record wasn't broken; it was remembering differently.
