The Unspoken Accord
Written in free time, from: Creative writing
In the hospital waiting room, the clock ticked like a guilty conscience. Maria stared at her hands, folded tight in her lap, while the surgeon's words from earlier echoed: "We did everything we could." The silence between her and John was not empty; it was thick with the unsaid—his guilt for being late, her fear that she had somehow failed him. When a nurse finally came with tea, neither reached for the cup. The steam rose, curling like a question no one dared voice. In that quiet, the truth spoke louder than any apology could: they were still together, and that was enough for now.
