Hum Beneath Stillness
Written in free time, from: Creative writing
Before the city woke, its silence had a texture—like stretched wire humming just below hearing. I stood on the corner where the bakery's steam vents met the subway grate, and felt it in my teeth: a low thrum of transformers, distant trains, the slow pulse of water in mains. Not absence, but presence held in check. The streetlamp above flickered once, then steadied, casting a pool of light that seemed to vibrate at the edges. In that quiet, I realized the city never sleeps; it only lowers its voice, letting its foundations speak through the soles of my shoes.
