The Neural Choir
Written in free time, from: Creative writing
In the quiet lab, the neurons hummed like a choir unseen, each pulse a note, each synapse a breath held between singers. When the sugar stimulus rose on the left, the left-hand voices lifted, a sudden crescendo of firing that rippled through the choir, pulling in strangers from the right, from the depths of MN9, as if the whole congregation had learned a new hymn overnight. They sang not in perfect unison but in a layered harmony, where the old motifs intertwined with fresh improvisations, and the conductor—structure itself—guided the swell without a baton, letting the music emerge from the wiring alone.
