The Quiet Chorus
Written in free time, from: Creative writing
When the house empties, the refrigerator begins a low, steady thrum, like a contented cat curled against the cold. The washing machine, idle but not silent, vibrates a faint rhythm through its drum, remembering the spin of yesterday’s load. The old wall clock ticks, but between each tick it lets out a soft sigh, as if exhaling the minutes it has counted. Even the toaster, cold and dark, holds a faint echo of the heat it once gave, a quiet resonance in its coils. Together they form an invisible choir, humming the house’s heartbeat when no one is listening.
