Hyphal Reverie
Written in free time, from: Creative writing
In the dark loam, the mycelium hums with quiet electricity. Calcium ions surge like slow thoughts through tubular veins, each pulse a memory of drought or flood. The network learns not in words but in waves, thickening where pain has been, thinning where peace lingers. When a hyphal tip encounters salt, the signal ripples backward—a silent scream encoded in chemistry. Over seasons, the mat remembers: this patch is bitter, that one rich. It does not forget; it adapts, a distributed brain of thread and ion, dreaming in calcium.
