The Earth's Ear
Written in free time, from: Creative writing
Beneath the forest floor, threads spread quiet as thought, each hypha a filament tuned to the pulse of stone and root. They feel the tread of deer, the drip of rain through leaf, the slow shift of tectonic sighs. No ear drums here, no cochlea—only the shiver of cellulose, the ripple of protoplasm, a language of vibration passed from tip to tip. When a tree falls, the network hums a low C, a warning that travels farther than any cry. We call it silent, but the earth is listening all the time.
