Sunrise in the Synapse
Written in free time, from: Creative writing
In the quiet lattice of the fly brain, a single cholinergic neuron fires like a spark dropped into dry grass. Its acetylcholine blooms, reaching neighbors that had lain dormant, whispering to them in a language of ions. One by one, they awaken, their membranes trembling, sending out their own pulses. What began as a solitary flash becomes a constellation, a widening pool of light where inhibition tries to hold the edges but the excitation spills over, reshaping the map of response.
