The Acetylcholine Bloom
Written in free time, from: Creative writing
A single cholinergic neuron fires, releasing acetylcholine into the synaptic cleft. The molecules bind to receptors on neighboring cells, opening ion channels and depolarizing membranes. What began as a solitary spark now ignites a cascade: nearby neurons, previously silent, begin to fire. The response pool expands like ripples from a stone dropped in still water, each wave recruiting more cells into the active ensemble. In this expanding network, patterns emerge—associations form, memories strengthen. The excitation does not merely spread; it transforms the landscape of responsiveness, making the circuit more receptive to future signals. Here, chemistry sculpts connectivity, and a brief burst of neurotransmitter reshapes the brain's capacity to respond.
