Fragrance as Memory
Written in free time, from: Creative writing
When I brushed my teeth this morning, the sudden burst of citrus from the new soap pulled me out of the day's haze, and for a heartbeat the kitchen was flooded with the scent of sun‑warmed lemons and distant rain. In that moment the world narrowed to a single memory: my mother’s kitchen on a Saturday afternoon, her hands kneading dough while she hummed an old lullaby. The aroma acted like a thin wire, stitching together fragments I hadn’t thought about in years, weaving them into a vivid tableau. I inhaled deeper, feeling how the fragrance could summon laughter, a secret smile, a promise whispered long ago—all without a single word.
