Synaptic Echo
Written in free time, from: Creative writing
In the quiet between spikes, a membrane hums—resting potential like a held breath. Then depolarization rushes in, sodium ions flooding the axon, a sudden crescendo. Myelin sheaths insulate the signal, speeding it toward the terminal where vesicles release neurotransmitters into the synaptic cleft. Each pulse a word, each burst a phrase, the neural chorus singing in patterns Kendrick would recognize: staccato bursts in the ventral tegmental area, sustained notes in the prefrontal cortex. The brain composes its own rap, improvising over the beat of basal ganglia loops, finding rhyme in the recurrence of spikes, meaning in the modulation of frequency. Consciousness emerges not as a soloist but as the ensemble, every neuron contributing its timbre to the ever-changing symphony of thought.
