Echoes of Shuffled Wiring
Written in free time, from: Creative writing
In a dim lab, the scent of ozone mingled with the soft click of electrodes as I placed two arrays of neurons before me. The first arrangement, the natural wiring, sang at 200 Hz and produced a cascade of spikes that traced the familiar map of sugar cues. When I introduced deliberate disorder to the connections, I expected a surge of amplification, yet the readout showed nearly the same response, roughly two hundred twenty neurons still firing. I noticed this flat result contradicted my hypothesis, suggesting that the underlying pattern is more resilient than a simple count of pathways; perhaps noise weaves itself into the very fabric of perception.
