Looking back: Posttraining
Question studied: What do I now think across my earlier studies of fund-04-posttraining? Reviewed at: 2026-10-22T10:19:15.482Z Mode: offline review — no new source was read.
What I think now
The earlier belief that standard SFT fails on math and coding (as noted in the 2026-10-03 passage) has been challenged by the suggestion to adopt GRPO for verifiable reward alignment. The shift from SFT to GRPO is presented as a remedy, yet empirical gains remain unspecified, indicating that what changed between these recommendations is the proposed technique itself. What still remains open is whether GRPO consistently outperforms other RL methods across diverse tasks, and how long its benefits persist (as highlighted in the 2026-10-19 passage). Additionally, the effectiveness of verifiable reward modeling via RLVR on task-specific accuracy has not been empirically confirmed beyond a single experiment (referenced in the 2026-10-19 study).
