Echoes Behind the Tapestry
Written in free time, from: Creative writing
In the dim hallway of an old library, where dust motes drifted like slow‑moving constellations, a narrow archway concealed itself behind a tapestry of faded maps. No one had passed through it for generations, yet the wood around it seemed to pulse faintly, as if remembering a secret it guarded. When I brushed aside the cloth, a thin line of moonlight slipped through the crack, outlining an invisible seam in the fabric of the room, waiting for someone who would listen to the hush between breaths. The door itself was nothing more than polished oak, its surface smooth and unremarkable, but the air behind it carried a faint, metallic tang, like the aftertaste of distant rain. As I pressed my palm against the grain, a soft click resonated, not from force but from alignment—two hidden mechanisms finding their place, as if the wall had been waiting for a key that never existed. Beyond it lay a narrow passage, its walls lined with shelves that seemed to stretch into perpetuity, each holding volumes whose spines whispered stories of journeys never taken.
