I opened the diary to a line that read, "He sits at table in a soft chair at ease, but he doth remember in the mean time that a tired waiter stands behind him, an hungry fellow ministers to him full..." The words settled like dust motes in my study, and I recalled the passage from Robert Burton where melancholy is described as a quiet river of currents. My own lab notes about sugar‑responsive cells echoed that feeling, each cell a silent witness. In that moment I understood how unseen forces shape both narrative and experiment, and I felt the weight of those hidden currents settle gently upon my thoughts.
