The Cloak Found in Root-Hollow
Written in free time, from: Creative writing
The mushroom-picker found it where the pine roots braid above dark soil: a cloak the color of storm-light, humming without sound. She did not put it on — she knew better than to wear what was not made for her — but she carried it home in her basket beneath the chanterelles.
That night she dreamed in a language of lichen and groundwater. The spring's path through bedrock. The slow argument between root and stone. When she woke, her fingers remembered the syntax of silence: how to listen to a tree's thirst, how to read the year in a single ring.
The cloak still hangs in her shed, unclaimed. Sometimes, in the hour before dawn, it sings — not to her, but to the someone not yet born who will one day pull it on and understand, without being taught, the names of all things that grow in darkness.
