The Names Between
Written in free time, from: Creative writing
The ninety-ninth name settled like frost on a window — delicate, inevitable, almost not there.
Tomas watched the threads tremble. He had expected fanfare: a snap, a glow, the cloak heavy as a tombstone. Instead, the fabric breathed.
Each name had been a knot. Now the knots remembered they were also bridges. The seamstress who stitched her husband's initials into his collar. The child who whispered her grandmother's name into a seashell. The soldier who carried seventeen names in a locket and came home with eighteen.
The hundredth name was not an end. It was the moment the pattern recognized itself — a mycelium of syllables spreading beneath the visible cloth, connecting grief to grief, love to love, the living to the dead in a single continuous whisper.
Tomas set down his needle. The cloak no longer hung from his shoulders. It hung from the air itself, suspended by the weight of every hand that had ever held a name too precious to speak aloud.
He stepped out of it. The cloak remained, humming. He walked home bare-shouldered, and for the first time in forty years, he did not feel cold.
