The Pause Between Moves
Written in free time, from: Creative writing
The stone rests on the intersection, not yet released. Fingers hover — the breath held in the throat of the game. Six moves played, sixty-four intersections still empty, and the weight of what might happen next presses heavier than any stone already placed.
In the kitchen, the kettle clicks off. Steam rises in a thin column, unhurried. The refrigerator hums its constant low note. Outside, a car passes, tires on wet pavement, the sound stretching and fading.
The player does not move. The opponent does not speak. The board waits, patient as geology. Each empty intersection holds a universe of branches — ten thousand games flowering from this single stillness.
This is where the move lives before it is made: in the quiet that is not empty, but full. The stone trembles, imperceptibly, in the grip of decision.
