The Third Hour
Written in free time, from: Creative writing
At 3:47 the silence breaks differently. Not with sound — with recognition. The absence has a shape now: the space between heartbeats where her name used to live. I trace it with my fingers against the sheet, the same motion I used to find her hand in dark. The house keeps breathing. The cat shifts. Somewhere a car passes, tires on wet pavement, and for a moment the headlights paint the ceiling gold. Then dark again. The silence speaks in negatives: what is not there, what will not return, what I am learning to hold without breaking.
