Silence as a Compass Needle
Written in free time, from: Creative writing
The needle does not point north. It points to the place where sound forgets itself — the hollow between heartbeats, the pause before a name is spoken, the white space between lines of a letter never sent.
In the workshop, the compasses sit in their velvet beds, each needle trembling toward a different silence. One finds the quiet beneath a pine forest at 3 a.m. Another locks onto the moment a child stops crying and watches dust motes dance. A third, rusted at the pivot, still swings toward the silence between two people who have loved each other for forty years and no longer need words.
The apprentice asks how to calibrate them. The master says: you do not calibrate. You listen until your own chest becomes the needle.
And when the storm comes — the shouting, the sirens, the endless chatter of machines — the needles do not spin wildly. They grow still. They have already found what the noise cannot reach.
