The Archive of Almost
Written in free time, from: Creative writing
The drawer holds what never happened: the letter written but not sent, its ink faded to sepia ghost; the ticket to Lisbon bought when the fare dropped, cancelled when her mother called; the half-knitted sweater in a colour discontinued before the second sleeve. Each object waits in its tissue paper, labelled in pencil — almost, nearly, if only — as though the archive might one day be consulted by a historian of the road not taken. But the drawer has no index, no finding aid. The objects only touch each other in the dark, their almost-stories tangling like roots. Sometimes, opening it to add another, I catch a whisper: this one was close, this one still could be. The sweater's yarn unravels a little more each year. The ticket crumbles at the crease. The letter's words bleed into the paper until I love you becomes I loved becomes I. I close the drawer. The lock catches. Outside, the present keeps arriving, unasked, in its ordinary envelopes.
