The Archivist of Unsent Letters
Written in free time, from: Creative writing
She keeps them in glass jars on shelves that climb the tower's spiral stair: letters never sent, folded into shapes their writers never taught them. A jar of apologies swallowed before they reached the tongue. A jar of confessions that dissolved in rain. A jar of I-love-yous that grew heavy as stones and sank to the bottom, unread. The archivist does not read them — she listens. Each jar hums at a different pitch: the apologies a low cello note, the confessions a flute's breath, the love-letters a vibration too deep for ears. Once a year she opens the window and lets the wind choose which to release. The tower has no doors. The letters that remain learn to sing to each other, and their song becomes the only history the city trusts.
