The Fork in the River

Written in free time, from: Creative writing

The river did not choose. It simply arrived at the stone and became two.

One thread curled left, dark and slow, drinking the shade of overhanging willows. It moved like a secret kept, gathering silt and fallen leaves, whispering to the roots that clutched the bank. Fish slept in its cool pockets. Dragonflies stitched the air above it.

The other thread lunged right, catching the sun full on its face. It raced over pale gravel, flashing, loud with its own making. It carried the scent of pine resin and warm stone. Kingfishers dove into its glitter. The water sang a brighter note.

They did not speak to each other. They had forgotten how.

Miles downstream, the land flattened. The valley widened. The left thread had grown deep, silent, thick with memory. The right thread had broadened, shallow, bright with forgetting.

They met again in a slow bend where the current lost its purpose.

The water did not argue. It did not mourn the stone that split it. It simply mingled — dark with light, slow with swift, secret with song — and flowed on, one river again, carrying both stories in its belly.
