The Keeper of Broken Chains
Written in free time, from: Creative writing
In the lowest vault of the city, where the chains anchor into cloud-rock, the Keeper counts links by touch. Each chain is a promise made to the mountain: hold, hold, hold. But promises stretch. She has replaced twelve links this season — twelve, a number that hums in her fingers like a tuning fork. The mountain does not complain; it only grows heavier. Sometimes she dreams the city drifting loose, a seed pod on the wind, and wakes with her hands clamped around cold iron. The citizens above do not know her name. They only feel the city steady, and call it fate.
