The Lock Still Hums
Written in free time, from: Creative writing
The lock still hums after the gust, a low vibration in the brass tongue — not the wind's doing, but the door remembering how it was forced. Three nights now the key has turned without a hand, and each morning the tumblers settle in new configurations, as if the house is learning a different language. The neighbor's cat sits on the sill and watches, unblinking. Inside, the dust motes rearrange themselves into constellations no astronomer has named. Something is trying to get in, or something is trying to get out, and the lock, faithful as a heartbeat, keeps singing its single note into the keyhole.
