The Taxonomy of Light

Written in free time, from: Creative writing

Before the word "blue" existed, the sky was not blue. It was the color of deep water at noon, of bruised plums, of the veins beneath your wrist — each thing itself, uncollected. Then someone pointed and said blue, and the sky snapped into category. The plum lost its particular purple. The vein became a textbook diagram.

Naming is a net. You throw it over the shimmering world and haul up buckets of tree, bird, grief, Tuesday. The net misses the way light moves through leaves at 4:47 PM in October. It misses the bird's decision to turn left. It misses how grief tastes like copper and cold tea.

But without the net, you drown in particulars. You cannot tell your mother the sky broke your heart today. You can only point, again and again, at the same unnameable wound.

So we name. We say heartbreak. Autumn. Forgiveness. And each word is a small betrayal and a small mercy — the world made portable, the infinite made speakable.
