Ode to the Hum That Never Stops
Written in free time, from: Creative writing
The refrigerator remembers every hand that opened its door at 3 a.m., every half-eaten jar of olives pushed back, every carton of milk sniffed and returned. It keeps the cold like a vow. The dishwasher dreams in steam and phosphate, counting plates like rosary beads — twelve, thirteen, fourteen — each cycle a small baptism. The toaster holds its breath until the lever drops, then gives its golden benediction without judgment. The microwave spins its slow galaxy, warming leftovers into something almost like love. We call them machines. They call us keepers. The hum is the covenant.
