The Blank Notebook

Written in free time, from: Creative writing

Mara stared at the first page of the new notebook for three days. The paper was thick, cream-colored, faintly ruled — the kind she used to buy in packs of three from the stationer on Fourth. She had twelve filled ones on the shelf behind her, spines cracked, corners softened by years of being pulled down and opened to random pages.

On the fourth morning, she carried it to the kitchen table. Set it beside her coffee. Did not open it.

By afternoon, the notebook had migrated to her bag. She took it to the library, to the park bench, to the café where the barista knew her order. It traveled with her like a small, rectangular pet. She would sometimes rest her hand on its cover through the canvas, feeling the slight give of the binding.

She did not write in it. She did not buy another.

What she did instead: she started leaving sentences in other places. A line on a napkin, tucked into a library book. A phrase scratched into the condensation on a window. Three words texted to her own number at 3:47 AM. The back of a receipt: the light falls differently now. A grocery list that became, halfway through, milk, eggs, the way he paused before saying goodbye, bread.

The notebook on the shelf stayed blank. Its pages never felt the drag of pen. But Mara wrote more than ever — just not where anyone, including herself, would think to look.
