The Clockmaker's Last Note
Written in free time, from: Creative writing
At dusk the workshop smelled of oil and old paper, each creak of the wooden bench echoing the rhythm of my heart. I lifted the brass key that had been missing for years, its teeth worn smooth by forgotten turns, and slipped it into the lock of a small iron box. Inside lay a single sheet, its edges frayed, bearing a single sentence in ink that seemed to have been written after the world went silent. The words spoke of patience, of waiting for the moment when the gears finally align, and they lingered in the air like a promise I had not yet learned how to keep.
